Branding The Sky With Pyro

When Paramount+ came to Sky Elements with a vision for celebrating the Dutton Ranch at Stagecoach, the country music festival in Indio, California, the brief was clear: do something the 80,000 fans on the field had never seen before, and make it unmistakably Yellowstone.

The dream was to create the "money shot", of the Dutton Ranch logo. The “DR” mark is rendered as a hot-iron cattle brand in promotional material, so the vision was to create the drone version of that design. The creative leap was immediate: don’t draw the brand in light. Brand it into the sky.

The team had a reference point. At San Diego Comic-Con, Sky Elements lit the Fantastic Four logo in literal flame for Marvel’s Deadpool & Wolverine activation.

The Show

The Sunday night performance choreographed Yellowstone-universe iconography across the desert sky above the Empire Polo Club, set to a country music score. Mountain silhouettes. Galloping horses. The unmistakable Y. And a fan-service moment that drew the loudest reaction of the night before the finale: the words

“BETH AND RIP ARE BACK” spelled out in 1,250 drones over the crowd. The cheers from 80,000 country fans carried across the polo grounds.

Then the finale. The full Dutton Ranch “DR” mark formed in the sky, and all 200 pyro drones, positioned as the entire front face of the logo, ignited simultaneously. For a few seconds, the brand wasn’t lit. It was burning. Exactly as it would on cattle hide on the Dutton ranch itself.

It is the largest drone show Sky Elements has ever produced at Stagecoach.

Flexible Under Pressure

The show was supposed to fly Saturday night, April 25th.

Severe winds rolled into the Coachella Valley that afternoon, and the festival was cancelled outright. A month of planning, animation, FAA coordination, ground logistics, festival and client schedules, and a 1,250-drone fleet staged and ready, was suddenly looking at no event.

Most productions of this scale don’t recover from a Saturday wash-out at a Sunday-ending festival. Sky Elements’ operations team worked overnight to reauthorize the flight window, recoordinate with festival production, and get the entire show, including the 200 pyro drones, cleared to fly Sunday night.

Paramount+ got the show they dreamed of. The fans got the moment they didn’t know was coming. And the Dutton Ranch got a debut beat that was talked about across the festival grounds for the rest of the night, and viral on socials.

Why It Worked

Stagecoach is the largest country music festival in the world. The Yellowstone universe is the most-watched cable franchise in the country. Putting the Dutton Ranch in the sky over 80,000 country music fans aligns perfectly for the audience Paramount+ wants to reach.

The fans were already there. The brand affinity was already there. What was missing was the moment, and a way to deliver it at the scale the franchise deserves. A drone show is the only medium that turns the entire night sky into the canvas, and reaches every single person on the grounds at once.

Paramount+ understood that. Sky Elements built the show that delivered on it: 1,250 drones, 200 pyro drones, a hot-iron Dutton Ranch finale that fit the property's visual language exactly, and the operational depth to fly it after a full-festival weather cancellation.

The right audience. The right moment. The right partner to pull it off.
